How you are scored
Writing is scored on a 1โ6 band scale in increments of 0.5 across all three task types. Build a Sentence tasks are assessed on grammatical accuracy โ word order, agreement, and correct syntactic structure. Write an Email and Write for an Academic Discussion tasks are assessed on task response (did you address the prompt appropriately?), coherence (is the response logically organized?), and language accuracy (grammar range and vocabulary precision). A score of 4โ4.5 (B2) reflects generally accurate writing with some systematic errors. A score of 5โ6 (C1โC2) requires consistently accurate grammar, a wide vocabulary range, and clear, well-organized responses.
Tips to improve your score
- 1
For Build a Sentence, read all the given words or phrases first before placing any of them. Identify the main verb and subject first โ these anchor the sentence structure โ then work outward to place modifiers and clauses.
- 2
For Write an Email, match your tone to the situation. A formal email to a professor requires different language than a casual email to a classmate. The 2026 test assesses appropriateness as well as accuracy.
- 3
For Write for an Academic Discussion, state your position clearly in the first sentence, then give one or two concrete reasons with brief supporting details. Raters reward directness and logical organization, not length.
- 4
Avoid common grammar errors that frequently lower Writing scores: subject-verb agreement, incorrect article use (a/an/the), wrong verb tense, and missing prepositions. These errors are systematic and fixable with targeted practice.
- 5
Practice writing quickly and cleanly without excessive backspacing. Many test-takers lose valuable time on unnecessary mid-sentence editing. Write a complete draft first, then do one clean pass for obvious errors at the end.
